This is a first novel from the author about sisters that I received from my sister as a birthday present. It takes place in India and the United States and touches upon topics such as immigration and family. I loved the author's style - her narrative descriptions. It opened up a whole new culture to me. I highly recommend it to readers and to the librarians.

A Thoroughbred race horse filly, imported from England, disappears, while being transported to the Blue Moon Ranch. Thunderhead, the white stallion belonging to Ken McLaughlin is the suspected thief. However, there are so many more stories in this book, than the saga of Crown Jewel. I find it amazing that this book is listed as juvenile fiction, as I feel the story is for a mature audience, maybe young adult and up. I loved the book. This is the last book in the Flicka trilogy and no longer published. Your chance to read it is through the library or hopefully a used copy that can be purchased on line.

Admission

Author: Jean Hanff Korelitz
Stars: 5
Review by: patco81

One of the best books I've read this year! Portia Nathan, admissions officer at Princeton University, finds her complacent personal and professional lives upended by a routine recruiting trip to an obscure New England alternative high school. The storyline, complete w/intriguing subplots, intellectual discourse, references to actual Princeton and Northeast locations, and detailed observations and inside peeks into the excruciatingly complex process of college admissions, moves quickly and is very well-written. (The one flaw is a predictable head-over-heels romantic encounter that threatens to turn the book into a soap opera melodrama.) For me, having spent two+ decades, including college years (two of them as a work-study participant in the admissions office!), in central NJ, delving into this novel was a nostalgic return to those times. A provocative and absorbing read - and don't overlook the multiple meanings of the one-word title.

The Winner

Author: David Baldacci
Stars: 4
Review by: T. Miller

Most people dream of winning the lottery, right? But the odds seem impossible. What if someone told you that they could guarantee you would win- would you take them up on the offer?

This thriller explores that possibility and gives the reader a whole new perspective on the lottery, from the author's story-weaving, as well as some research into past lottery winners.

Fearless

Author: Max Lucado
Stars: 5
Review by: RjS

I had read Who Moved My Cheese, earlier this summer and within this book was the question, "What would you do if you weren't afraid?" and this book helps you to go beyond fear by reminding the reader that nothing, as horrible as a nothing can be is bigger than God. I really liked how Max Lucado used scripture to underscore why it is important to not worry, or be anxious or concerned. I really enjoyed this book and for many people, Max Lucado may not be saying anything that people don't already know...however, it is good to be reminded of such things.

Animals Make Us Human

Author: Temple Grandin
Stars: 5
Review by: TooManyBooksTooLittleTime

Temple Grandin makes us think about how we relate to animals and why it is so important to listen to them. She is a brilliant animal scientist and a person with autism, so her thoughts and observations are more in tune with what animals need than the average person. I had no idea cats could be OCD. If you love animals, read this book. It will give you great insight into a number of animals.

Review by: JamBob

Second book in the Seaside Knitters Mystery series following Death by Cashmere. A pretty mysterious stranger comes to the harbor town and suddenly a prominent artist is found murdered. Is there something to tie these two people together? Have bad feelings amongst the inhabitants produced a tragic ending for one of them? You can smell the briny breezes and grilled shrimp cooking while the author weaves a tale of suspicion in this colorful seaside town. The fictitious characters knit soft caps for cancer patients and the author was thoughtful enough to include a pattern in the back of the book for anyone else who wants to knit head huggers for cancer patients who lost their hair. A mystery with salty sea flair!

I found it awesome to read how many other people feel about the church. Represents a spectrum of thought from conservative to liberal, from those still in the church to those long gone. Written by a daughter of Bobby Kennedy, it includes her perspective of growing up in the Kennedy family, learning of her father's death, and the strong call to service that is embedded in the church and the Kennedy family.

That Old Cape Magic

Stars: 4
Review by: Jelsey

Richard Russo is one of my favorite authors. And he tells an excellent story in this book. However, I don't think it comes up to his standard, set by recent books Empire Falls, and Bridge of Sighs. It's a little too static, and even predictable. I just didn't get really interested in the characters. Unusual for a Russo story. But there are wonderful vignettes along the way.

Warm Springs: Traces of a Childhood at FDR's Polio Haven

Author: Susan Richards Shreve
Stars: 4
Review by: Jelsey

At age 11, the author goes to Warm Springs, the rehabilitation center established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for children who had residual effects from polio. She spent three years on and off getting various surgeries to compensate for her lost muscles. Her memoir is a fast-moving story, devoid of pity or sentimentality. She refused to be the perfect patient, and often caused mayhem while acting as a helper to the staff. Shreve is a novelist and a professor of English. I think young people will find this an amazing story about an epidemic disease they now receive a vaccine to prevent. Of course, it's a really good read for everyone.

Big Cat Pepper

Author: Elizabeth Partridge
Stars: 5!
Review by: patco81

Full disclosure: yes, this is a picture book and I am an adult. But when I saw the cover depicting a tabby identical to my own recently-deceased Carver, I had to open the book and read on. What a gift! Ms Partridge's skill in depicting the eternal bond between a human (a little boy, in this case) and a pet (the boy's beloved cat Pepper) is astonishing, even more so because it is told in verse. The illustrations by Lauren Castillo are just perfect: colorful, warm, realistic.

Bird in Hand

Author: Christina Baker Kline
Stars: 4
Review by: patco81

What happens when your best friend since childhood, who always gets what she wants (published novel, plushy apartment in NYC, world travel, unconditional love and admiration from family, friends, fans) decides she wants your husband, too? In other hands, this betrayal may have turned into a maudlin soap opera, or a feminist screed, or perhaps a brutal murder plot. Here, the author creates strong characters, not stereotypes, and intriguing subplots. An interesting literary hook has alternate chapters, in different typeface, chronicle the relationship of the two couples at the center of the book, starting from ten years prior to present time and ending with their first meeting as graduate students in England.

Play Dead

My Father's Tears and Other Stories

Author: John Updike
Stars: 4
Review by: patco81

Bittersweet collection of short stories evoking nostalgia, regret and sometimes triumph. Every story heightens the reader's awareness that Updike is old; his primary theme is the eye cast backward to record and perhaps revise memory. Sadly, of course, this is his final collection of writings. A note to those who may be new to Updike, or for others who prefer his earlier books: join me in returning to my favorite of his characters, the Maples, in a newly-released version by the same name (available in the HCL system). Updike is at his best when unflinchingly documenting the course of a marriage; Richard and Joan Maple are unforgettable: ordinary yet remarkable, iconic yet fallible, human beings.

The Girls from Ames

Review by: patco81

Somewhat dry, overly-detailed and hard to follow at first, the narrative gains momentum after the eleven girls/women develop individual personas following high school graduation. The Soul of a Dog

Author: Jon Katz
Stars: 3
Review by: RjS

Jon Katz is one of my favorite authors and I was really looking forward to reading his new book. The book was enjoyable, don't get me wrong. It is a series of essays, personal observations by Jon of his animals and the role they play in his life, to prove that animals have a soul. I don't think he ever answered or proved the question but I enjoy Jon's struggle to remain realistic about his animals, without anthropomorphizing them. I liked the book and I think others will too, however, this book is not as touching as A Dog Year or A Good Dog. You may want to read those instead.

Jeepers! It's Nancy Drew in a revised story of spying and sabotage at NASA in Florida. Although this book was originally published over 60 years ago (before the space program) the older version was re-written to embrace new technology and a new criminal element. The characters are the same but the storyline is jazzier with more modern lingo. To tell you the truth I like the older version better- a look at the gentility of a bygone era. So why did I read this book? The Nancy Drew convention in April 2010 on Merritt Island Fla. will be based upon it....what fun!

"Every action has a consequence" as a theme is incorporated throughout the book and how the characters' choices affect one another's lives. A must read (and very different from the animated movie- no surprise there).

A beautifully written book about three young teens whose lives are going to change as a result of a full solar eclipse. Incredible character development and research shared throughout this book.

Although this was intended for young adults, Stargirl was a touching and introspective book about a girl who defies social norms without fear of not fitting in. I will be recommending this book to many of my students...

This story quickly pulled me in and kept my attention. I felt there was great character development and a story that was both touching and surprising. The author was new to me, but I will be following her from this point on.

Not a romance book for the faint of heart. Hard core and more...More than sex, there is mystery and intrigue with a twist in the end. LL doing what she does best...pushes the edge...Read her books if you dare to read on the "dark side."

Someone to Love

If you like to read unbelievable ghost love stories then this one is for you. I enjoyed the suspense of solving both a present day and 100 year old mystery in an old English Manor but the ending got a bit ridiculous....why did his fiance return to England on the eve of their wedding and commit suicide? Tragic events that challenge rational thinking. I did finish the book but I do not feel inspired by the author.

I'll Never Be French

Author: Mark Greenside

In the same type of humor as Bill Bryson, without the intelligence and wit of Peter Mayle, comes the story a native New Yorker, living in California, and visiting Brittany in France for a summer vacation to write. He then ends up buying what sounds like an extremely charming house and lovely friends in the village. I was not as interested in him, as I was in the house and the surroundings. Quick read at 241 pages.

As a Man Thinketh

Author: James Allen

Review by: RjS

This library edition actually has 2 James Allen books in one: As A Man Thinketh and From Poverty to Power. I liked the book and the message of hope it delivers. Anyone can change their life from one minute to the next. All that you need to live a happy, successful and positive life is already in you, it is amazing that we are most times the roadblocks to enjoying the life which we desire to live. I think that this book is more like a reference, one reading is not enough, rather reading it over and over, hoping that the words will be absorbed into your consciousness.

This is the latest Meg Langslow mystery. There's always a bird theme of some sort. This was a funny mystery, if a bit formulaic. Enjoyable, nonetheless.

This is a great historical fiction novel for young adults. I was a history major in college and never knew about the epidemic that hit Philadelphia in 1793 until I read this book. Anderson does a wonderful job of blending historical fact with a well-paced, interesting plot that touches on issues all young people face, past and present.

Great back story of a troubled character and the story line. It had a lot going on and some new characters were added to the mix. I hope that means there is still more to come.

Peacekeeper: A Major Ariane Kendros Novel

Author: Laura E. Reeve

Review by: mea

This book piqued my intereste since it was listed on the HCL Sci Fi List. It was nice to see a female, scifi author who wrote about a strong female character that wasn't based on some romance. The book is very political using the scifi platform to discuss things like nuclear war, nuclear destruction, disbanding of these types of weapons (from both sides), WMD inspections, treaties, war crimes, the use of torture, etc. I really don't see much of a future, moving forwards for this "series" but I see a lot of development stories that feature the past.
