Jon Katz is one of my favorite authors and I was really looking forward to reading his new book. The book was enjoyable, don't get me wrong. It is a series of essays, personal observations by Jon of his animals and the role they play in his life, to prove that animals have a soul. I don't think he ever answered or proved the question but I enjoy Jon's struggle to remain realistic about his animals, without anthropomorphizing them. I liked the book and I think others will too, however, this book is not as touching as A Dog Year or A Good Dog. You may want to read those instead.
