Bird in Hand

Author: Christina Baker Kline
Stars: 4

What happens when your best friend since childhood, who always gets what she wants (published novel, plushy apartment in NYC, world travel, unconditional love and admiration from family, friends, fans) decides she wants your husband, too? In other hands, this betrayal may have turned into a maudlin soap opera, or a feminist screed, or perhaps a brutal murder plot. Here, the author creates strong characters, not stereotypes, and intriguing subplots. An interesting literary hook has alternate chapters, in different typeface, chronicle the relationship of the two couples at the center of the book, starting from ten years prior to present time and ending with their first meeting as graduate students in England.
