Full disclosure: yes, this is a picture book and I am an adult. But when I saw the cover depicting a tabby identical to my own recently-deceased Carver, I had to open the book and read on. What a gift! Ms Partridge's skill in depicting the eternal bond between a human (a little boy, in this case) and a pet (the boy's beloved cat Pepper) is astonishing, even more so because it is told in verse. The illustrations by Lauren Castillo are just perfect: colorful, warm, realistic.
