My Life with George

Author: Judith Summers
Stars: 3
Review by: RjS

The cover of this book has a very cute picture of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. However, this book is more than a dog book. It is the story of how a family recovers from a terrible tragedy and with the help of their dog, puts together all the pieces of their life together. It is very funny and at times, very moving. I enjoyed this book.

This book is the sequel to Durable Goods. The protagonist, Katie Nash, moves to Missouri with her father and faces the challenges of fitting in at school and falling in love for the first time. This novel is powerful in its capacity to convey the emotions of growing up and dealing with loss - I'm looking forward to reading the next book about Katie, True to Form.

The Girls from Ames

Review by: gn

I was drawn to this book because I was curious to see how the author would portray women's friendships; I wasn't disappointed. It took me a bit to keep all 11 friends straight, and after that I came to enjoy the women at all the different stages of their relationships. The book had me thinking of some of my friendships in High School, Nursing School and our first neighborhood with kids.

This fast paced mystery definitely kept my interest. What a nightmare to believe that the child you have adopted, could be another parent's "missing" child. I liked the writing style and quick to the point chapters. A good summer read.

The Persian Bride

Review by: Elaine

This story of a couple who find each other and then lose each other in Iran, is a facinating yet sad one. It is beautifully written and so descriptive that you easily jump into the storytelling. It outlines the country's history, and its characters well. Iraq and Afghanistan are backdrops in this story too. The poignant relationship of these two main characters and what they each go through certainly sticks with you.....

A Mended and Broken Heart: The Life and Love of Francis of Assisi

Author: Wendy Murray
Stars: 3
Review by: RjS

I read Will I See My Dog in Heaven, which had many references to St. Francis, and so, when I found this book in the library, I wanted to read it, in order to learn about St. Francis. The structure of the Catholic Church was much different than the church we know today. St. Francis was a bit of a revolutionary, founding a new order that was quite different from the excesses that plagued the Church hierarchy in this time. For a man who lived in the 12th century, he was so far ahead of his time. He was ecologically minded and I found it interesting to learn of the experiences which influenced him and resulted in the man we know as St. Francis of Assisi. It is a dry book to read, like a history book would be but I enjoyed learning and this is the reason why I picked this book.

This is a wonderful summer book about family, sorrow, and adolescence. Told from the viewpoint of a twelve year old girl growing up on a Texas Army base, it contains a great amount of wisdom and evokes the reader's own memories of growing up. Overall, it is a very enjoyable read.

Review by: Library Aimee

It is hard to give this book a 5 because it is so disturbing, but I couldn't put the book down. The author does an amazing job recreating the lives and motives of the two killers. So much information that was reported after the tragedy was false. Learning the truth seems so necessary even though the tragedy happened a decade ago.

Espresso Shot

Review by: L.Z.

Although I've liked the rest of the series, I found this one to be disappointing...too much drama, too unbelievable, and, I won't spoil the ending, but will admit to being quite unimpressed with it. The other "Coffee House Mystery" series books would be a better choice, if you're looking for something to read!

The Virgin of Small Plains

Author: Nancy Pickard
Stars: 5
Review by: Katherine B.

This novel is no ordinary mystery book about the murder of a young girl in a mid-western small town. The Virgin of Small Plains is a powerful novel, filled with complex emotions, flawed characters and dreams unfulfilled. Pickard is a masterful storyteller who explores the impact of what happens to individuals and families who choose to live with cover ups, lies and secrets. The story is also about people trying to make something good out of something bad by surrounding the mysteriously murdered girl with mystical healing powers...thus allowing the simple townsfolk to finally find redemption.

The Shanghai Moon

Author: S.J. Rozen
Stars: 5
Review by: Katherine B.

This is S.J. Rozan's eighth book in a series featuring an unlikely pair of detectives, Lydia Chin & Bill Smith. This was my first introduction to the series and what a pure delight!

There are so many elements of the storytelling by Rozan that I enjoyed. It's about a modern day P.I. woman in New York City who still understands and bows to the significance of following many conventional Chinese traditions. It has a subplot in history, as P.I. Chin follows the case of the stolen "mythical" brooch that was created to commemorate the marriage of a Jewish woman, who escaped from Nazi Germany and resettled in Shanghai, and marries an aristocratic Chinese man. It's about the link from the past to the future as we, like Lydia, become personally involved with the lives of the main characters who began their journey in Shanghai 1938, separate, and are finally rejoined in current day Chinatown in search of the legendary brooch. Sadness, romance, mystery, dead bodies and heartwarming narration by Lydia Chin's voice all combine to create an enjoyable read. I can't wait to read the first 7 books in the series, as I wait for the 9th to come out!

Will I See My Dog in Heaven?: God's Saving Love for the Whole Family of Creation

Author: Jack Wintz
Stars: 3
Review by: RjS

The author, a Franciscan Priest who writes for the St. Anthony Messenger attempts to answer this question. Using scripture from the Bible, he points out that animals and humans make up all of creation; each species is a viable part. I really enjoyed reading the perspectives using the story of Noah and Jonah. However, what really grabbed my attention was St. Francis of Assisi and how this man, who lived in the 12th century, was so ecologically minded. He was so ahead of his time and makes all that he preached, suddenly, fresh and new.

The Virgin of Small Plains

Author: Nance Pickard
Stars: 5
Review by: Katherine B.

The Virgin of Small Plains is so much more than a standard mystery book, as it details the impact of a "mysterious" murder of a young girl on a small farm town in the mid-west. The secrets, lies, fears, banishments, losses, and confused emotions are uncovered in scenes from "before" vs "after" the crime. Meanwhile, the murdered mystery girl has taken on almost mystical healing qualities to the living. The Virgin of Small Plains is a masterful, powerful novel, filled with regret and loss -- and redemption.

This series is written by a real-life forensic anthropologist, the one who founded the Body Farm in Tennessee. If you have read Cornwell or Reichs, surely you know of the Body Farm! I would really have given this book ten stars if I could. This book was first published in 1951, and has still not lost its strong relevance in the need to preserve the last inland Eskimos, "the people of the deer." This is a wonderful story of the people, their past and present. Farley Mowat writes with love and compassion, and this is a just a fabulous book. I want to read the rest of this very popular Canadian writer and conservationist.

Simple Country Wisdom

Author: Susan Waggoner
Stars: 3
Review by: Tartu

Some nice ideas and pretty photos, but sometimes the text contradicts itself: in one part, Waggoner recommends adding salt to boiling water to keep it boiling, but a page later states she never adds salt to pasta water, only olive oil to prevent sticking, which most professional chefs agree does nothing to prevent sticking, that large amounts of rapidly boiling water and attentive stirring prevent sticking.

Death at La Fenice

Stars: 4
Review by: Transit Story Reader

I enjoyed this mystery book about a murder that takes place at the La Fenice, the Opera House, in Venice. Author Donna Leon has a way of creating very strong visual images with broad strokes describing this charming city of mystery and art. She also allows the underbelly of the city to be seen as well thereby creating a balance of what the visitor to Venice sees and what the residents of the city experience. Maestro Helmut Wellauer has been murdered and at the scene of the crime we meet Guido Brunetti, Vice-Commissario of police. Leon takes us on a tour of this city as Brunetti meets with the many characters in the story. As he travels from one area of the city to another on his search for clues, the reader is given the opportunity to experience Venice with its many canals and passages weaving us into the history of the city and its people. It was a pleasure to read and left me with a great desire to visit Venice and walk the streets that Commissario Brunetti walks daily as he solves the many crimes of his beautiful city.

Bay of Spirits: A Love Story

Review by: TooManyBooksTooLittleTime

I read this book, suggested on a HCL reading list, because I have been to Newfoundland and loved it. I had no idea that the author, Farley Mowat, was a highly acclaimed Canadian author, and conservationist. I enjoyed the book, since I had traveled all over Newfoundland and parts of Labrador one summer for vacation a few years ago. It was interesting to read about the isolated islands in the 1960's with the history of the island and its people. If you would love to learn about a truly beautiful island, and wonderful, hardworking people, this is your book. They still kill/eat whales, seals and other animals we would never eat here, and the author treads on this carefully, against agreeing with people who kill animals to live, and sometimes for sport. It is a look into another world.
