This novel is no ordinary mystery book about the murder of a young girl in a mid-western small town. The Virgin of Small Plains is a powerful novel, filled with complex emotions, flawed characters and dreams unfulfilled. Pickard is a masterful storyteller who explores the impact of what happens to individuals and families who choose to live with cover ups, lies and secrets. The story is also about people trying to make something good out of something bad by surrounding the mysteriously murdered girl with mystical healing powers...thus allowing the simple townsfolk to finally find redemption.
