Lock In

Author: John Scalzi
Stars: 5
Review by: Kristen E.

Excellent on audio! Will Wheaton narrates 😁 I think I liked it more than I would have as a paper copy. It was a great premise--in the near future there is a virus that hits the world and some people experience "Lock In": Victims fully awake and aware, but unable to move or respond to stimulus. The world changes to meet the challenge. This is a genre-bending police procedural/thriller/sci-fi book and I can't recommend it enough. Get the audio!

This Time Together: Laughter and Reflections

Author: Carol Burnett
Stars: 5
Review by: Miss Lucy

Having never been much of a fan of Carol Burnett, I checked out this audiobook only on the strong recommendation from a co-worker (and fellow Adult Summer Reader) whose taste in books has never let me down. This memoir of Carol's career, told via random snippets and stories, was fascinating! I now want to go back and watch several episodes of her show. I recommend listening to this book, as it's narrated by Carol, and you can't go wrong with that.

This was a great summer read for those who prefer historical fiction. As soon as the history of Cuba became a heavy read, romance came bounding in. Lighter than I prefer, but an entertaining and informative read.

Mayday: Eisenhauer, Khruschev, and the U2 affair

Author: Michael Beschloss
Stars: 4
Review by: BigBison

Well researched, intelligent, factual description of a major event that led to the cold war era and the eventual replacement of Soviet leadership. It was written in 1986 and therefore does not have the additional Soviet perspective that has been subsequently released. It is also overly lengthy, but a must read for history buffs.

Not sure what happened. I usually enjoy this series, but the writing was ho-hum, the characters somewhat flat, and the last third of the book was just Max explaining everything to Cotton. And the murder was somewhat easy to figure out.

Wow! Scientology memoirs never cease to amaze me. It was absolutely terrible the things that happened and probably still happen to the members of this so-called religion. Just, read this one. I listened to the audio and I loved the narrator. I was absolutely riveted!!!

The End

Crazy House

This Young Adult novel is Patterson's version of Hunger Games. A good read for younger teens, although there is violence. The kids in this one fight in a ring as opposed to killing each other in Hunger Games. It is clear that it is going to be a series.

A solid YA adult read from the author of the excellent Me, Earl, & the Dying Girl. Jesse Andrews has a knack for authentically capturing the voice of his quirky, insecure, and very much teen protagonists. I enjoyed the interesting ways he used dialogue in this book.

The Rest of the Story

Author: Sarah Dessen
Stars: 4
Review by: Amy W.

Sarah Dessen introduces us to 17 year old Emma Saylor in her latest novel focusing on the various relationships that make up a young person’s life. Although intended for a teen audience, adults may enjoy the intergenerational aspect of the novel, in addition to the journey of this young woman trying to figure out who she is. This all takes place during the weeks Emma spends away from home, while living at the lake house that holds so many deep memories for her and her family.

Just Kids

Stars: 5
Review by: Mitchie L.

It is the story of a young Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe and how they met in NYC in the late 60's. It details their relationship and their rise toward artistic fame. It is beautifully written, honest and poignant. My best friend gave it to me to read which makes it even more special.

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill

Author: Abbi Waxman
Stars: 4
Review by: Amy W.

In author Abbi Waxman’s third and most recent novel, main character Nina Hill’s carefully planned life is uprooted by an unexpected romance and a family she never knew existed. Just a few pages in and I had fallen in love with this character, even before the introduction of her cat Phil! This book is light and funny, and is filled with literary references, a quirky and complex character, and even an appearance by a camel. Perfect for book lovers and any reader looking for a fun summer read!

The Hot SEAL Box Set (Bks1-3)

Author: Lexi Wilson
Stars: 2
Review by: Aleksza

This box set consisted of 3 books: Billionaire SEAL, Cowboy SEAL & SEAL's Small Town Girl. The books had very little to do with SEALs. The only thing was that all three men were ex-SEALs. The last story was the best, but all were OK.

Teddy: A Brother's in Blue Novella

Christmas Cake Murder

Author: Joanna Fluke
Stars: 5
Review by: Aleksza

I rate this cozy as a 5 only because it provides a lot of backstory for those of us that have read this series. This is like reading a book 1 vs a book 23. The murder was light and the back story had a lot of twists and turn. A great summer read!

Frankenstein

Author: Mary Shelley
Stars: 4
Review by: BKF

This edition I read was the uncensored 1818 edition. Leaves the reader with many moral questions to think about. Frankenstein was brilliant in his ability to create a living, thinking being, (he was about 23 years old when he created the Monster) but was naive in giving any thought to the consequences.

Marriage: Illustrated with Crappy Pictures

Once again I really like her "feel good books." Even though this may be considered a COZY it deviates from the norm. It still has a mystery without a murder. It brings people together and makes this read feel good. I am happy that the author continues with this series. It was getting shaky at one point, but I think she really found her way. A really good summer read.

What can I say? It’s Gamache! Imagine being named executor for a will of someone you never heard of! There is also the continuation about the drugs from the last book. I must admit I figured a lot of it out! So glad there’s another book! But there was one part of the ending I was not happy with.

The Coroner’s Lunch

Review by: Diane G.

This is a book that I was asked to read by a loved one that I would not have picked out for myself. This book was incredibly hard to get through and made lots of claims that were not backed up by evidence or research. I cannot recommend this book to anyone.

Where the Crawdads Sing

Review by: Pyrex

One of the best books I've read in a long time. It flows with a rhythm of nature, loneliness, strength, poetry and an undercurrent of intrigue.

The Secret Mother

Author: Shalini Boland
Stars: 2
Review by: Kristen E.

I thought the writing was amateur and the story was pretty obvious. The main character was kind of meek and ridiculous and a lot of suspension of disbelief was required on the part of the reader. There were enough plot holes to drive a truck through. I'm disappointed. Thought it was a promising premise, but unfortunately it was a bit of a letdown. I'm surprised the ratings on Goodreads are so high.

Death Wears a Mask

Author: Ashley Weaver
Stars: 4
Review by: Ann Marie

This book is the second in a mystery series by Ashley Weaver, a librarian in Louisiana. The series features an upper-class English couple in the 1930s. The main characters, Amory and Milo Ames have been compared to Nick and Nora Charles. I enjoyed the first book, which was an Edgar finalist, and have continued reading. Ms. Weaver's books are well-written and the characters are interesting. A nice summer reading find!

The Beach House

Author: James Patterson
Stars: 3
Review by: BigBison

Preposterous plot, excessively short chapters (which gives me a great sense of accomplishment), and one of the lead characters shares a name with a prominent librarian. A great setting in the Hamptons to contrast the haves and the have nots. What more could you possibly ask for? Just a beach read and if a wave swept it away you would not be overly upset.

The Little Old Lady Who Broke All The Rules

Review by: Lizzy

The premise was good. Maybe something was lost in the translation? The characters seemed cardboard and it did not flow well. Five seniors are denied many things in their retirement home. They feel like prisoners. The group decided to commit a kidnapping of some famous paintings so they can go to prison where they’d be better off. This could really be funny if made into a movie with the right actors and editing. And what was with all the singing?

Safari anyone? Join Melrose and a spunky 10 year old in the heart of Africa spying on mining of tanzanite among other things. How the child gets there is a story in itself. Once again Jury needs help in solving a murder of a brilliant scientist and his wife. Suspend belief and just enjoy. So glad to see there is another book in the series.

I've always enjoyed books written by Mary Kay Andrews. This one took quite a while to get into since there were so many layers to it. I almost put it down a few times, but am happy I stuck with it. By page 300 + it became really good as lots of pieces started coming together and many secrets of the past were revealed. I would definitely recommend it.

This book is a very provocative book. Would be great for a book club -discussing what is ethical, but know that there is a gray area. It puts ideas to the test that you might have thought one way, but could see the other side.

The Farmer's Son-Calving on a Family Farm

Author: John Connell

Review by: BertaP

Such a lovely, poignant memoir. An Irish son returns to his family's farm in West Ireland in his late 20's after several years of working at writing and film making in Australia and Canada. And after a failed relationship and a bout with depression. Lyrical and poetic account of his daily chores and his prickley relationship with his difficult father and his hardworking mother. And the cows and the sheep!

Henry, Himself

I throughly enjoy hanging with Irene and Kai. Fey and dragons are meeting in Paris to sign a peace treaty along with the Librarians. Will chaos rule or will dragons take to the air?
