I love this writer; she can write emotional scenes that can make me cry. I give this book 4 stars for character value.
Extremely handsome Lord Edmond is what very plain Mary finds repulsive. He is lewd, lascivious, and mocking. Mary, a lonely widow, is betrothed to Viscount Goodrich. One day she finds herself walking up a path with Edmond, when a severe thunderstorm hits. Mary is in such a state of panic that Edmund takes her into a shelter, holds her, makes love to her, and falls in love with her. She tells him of her fear of storms, since an incident when some soldiers in the tent next to hers got killed by lightning. Even though she is betrothed, Edmond pursues her, because he is so much better than the Viscount. Mary has realized Edmond's true character, because he saved her during the thunderstorm, while the Viscount laughed at her. Edmond and Mary claim each other's love.
