Loved it! This is the best Jane Feather book.
A 17 year old girl on her French estate (1769-70) watched the badly treated serfs come to kill her family. Her mother's pleas started to have effect, but the father, uncles, and grandfather shot at the serfs and killed the girl's mother, then a serf killed the whole family. The girl must make her way to Paris in boys clothes. An English noble finds this street urchin (thinking she's a boy) in an alley, being beaten by a baker for taking old bread from the garbage. He saves her.
A love story of a 35 year old nobleman and a 17 year old girl, very beautifully done. Through the eyes of a 17 year old to a 22 year old mother of two, you feel what hell the terror was.
