This had its
moments. The title says it all - a book written by two of a smallish
town pastor's sons consisting of recollections of their life growing up
in the church. If you have any sort of shared
experience you can really understand some of these things, despite their
childhood (and the memories) mostly being in the late 60s. A lot of
experiences are timeless - old ladies visiting that will never leave,
church trips and special events, squabbling factions
within, a man dressed as a pirate breaking in and stealing office
supplies. OK, so perhaps the last one is not a common experience. But
quite a few are, which is the book's strength, and its weakness. For me
at least, another person could easily like this more.
Their humor is for the most part very folksy and Erma Bombeck / Kids say
the darndest things, and I just don't find that very funny. If you
think the Andy Griffith show is funny you might like this more. The
titles are inventive The Night Todd caught on fire
for the Lord, for example, and the writing very fluid, but it wasn't in
my style to be more enjoyable.
