Cruise Confidential

Author: Brian Bruns
Stars: 5

Very good if you have spent any time in a customer service related industry. After he found himself nearly broke and newly divorced at 25, Bruns became a traveler, heading all over. Shortly he met a girl who turned his head so far around she yanked him onto another ocean. When his Transylvanian girlfriend, Bianca, gets assigned to a prestigious cruise he figures "why not" and despite no American ever having stayed the full 8 months term ever in the history of the line he signs up. Eclectic roommates engaging in drunken binges and sex become the norm for him, getting assigned to bunking with one character after another. Most of which find his being American very entertaining. Often having to improvise to please prickly clientele, he manages to survive the full 8 months and then some despite his and Bianca's relationship struggles and the fact that nobody on board cannot understand him that his native state of Iowa is not in reality Idaho.

In the end he is able to employ his fancy art history degree into a job on board, much to his own shock, and rides off into an early leave on another ship. Very good for the day to day and behind the scenes sort of things, and his outlook is remarkable in the face of all the idiocy he endures. One can really tell he worked in the service industry before, enduring idiots with a smile and then turning around to cuss like a sailor.
