The (book) series ended and I don't get HBO at home, so I
finally succumbed to my curiosity and checked out the library's DVDs.
The whole first season is just the first book of the series, with a few
added plot twists. I was hoping to find that
the TV series portrayed the town and characters as they come across in
the books; and for the most part it does. Stretching a single novel out
over many hours allowed time to develop personalities and reveal
back stories more naturally than cramming it all into
one pilot or even a feature film. The directors', writers', and actors'
commentary all confirm a sincere effort to remain true to Harris' books;
casting & dialog proved that they mostly succeeded. I was
disappointed that the actor who plays Vampire Eric is not,
as in the books, the most gorgeous & irresistible ever seen, dead or
alive. However, for the most part, if you finished the books and are
still in the mood for more stories of Bon Temps, watch the DVDs. If you
don't get HBO, be forewarned: you'll see a lot more sex directly, which the books only implied.

I agree, TV Eric does not match my imagination. I finished the book series last summer and I started to watch the TV series and stopped. I didn't get into it. Imagination rules! However, I marathoned the series and began to like it. Now I have to wait for the grand finale to see how it compares.
