For Her Own Good: 150 Years of the Experts' Advice to Women

Author: Barbara Ehrenreich

From the author of Nickel and Dimed: on not getting by in America comes this (earlier) study of how American women have been manipulated to fit society's view, and political & financial needs. After evicting midwives & Wise Women from the role of healers to make room for "trained" male doctors; "experts" imposed often conflicting standards on every aspect of marriage, female anatomy & psychology, housework and childcare. Their changing edicts & theories ridiculed whatever was then in vogue, forcing women to rely on (male) "experts" if they wanted to be healthy and sane.
