Viscount Whitfield goes to the assistance of his godmother, whose diary has been stolen.  He must pretend to be the betrothed of his godmother's housekeeper, who, he can tell by her looks, is a Fairchild.  The Fairchilds are his hated enemies.  He believes the Fairchilds have the diary.

A secret he knows, but does not tell his make-believe betrothed, is that she is a murderess.  But out of love for the old woman (godmother), she goes to help find and retrieve the diary, even though she could be hung.

Good story - great courage.
