Although I'm not usually interested in the WWI era, this complex novel
captivated me with the lives of disparate people drawn together by social
issues, politics and war. Follett's genius is giving his characters lives we can
care about. How he eventually brings together a Welsh coal miner, a British
aristocrat, his Russian princess wife, her maid, Russian peasant factory
workers, an idealistic German soldier and many others - I'll let you discover
for yourself.
