Clara, a Dorset veterinarian, finds herself embroiled in a 50 year old mystery, poisonous snakes, religious cults, and not one, but two, eligible bachelors vying for her attention. What unfolds is a decent whodunit that captures life in a small, isolated village. Interestingly, the provincial village closely mimics Clara's efforts to remain closed off from the other villagers because of her perceived physical deformity. There are hints to what exactly happened to her in her past, but Bolton keeps you guessing until the middle of the book before explaining Clara's physical features. The other, larger mystery, is well-played out, with enough twists to keep you guessing.
