The Martian

Author: Andy Weir
Stars: 4
Review by: ILovemyDaisy

I enjoyed this book and can't wait for the movie. Does nothing phase this guy? I mean really, stuck on Mars alone and never an emotional moment? Duct tape and a paper clip are all he needs to survive anywhere - the MacGyver of space.  It got a bit deep in science jargon, but it's a fun read. Thank you to my librarian for suggesting it!

Into the Storm

There is a fine line between being politically correct and having a social conscience.. I noticed SB's being PC right away...always safe sex..condom was mentioned 264 times in the first ten books..at least.. older men, younger woman... older woman, younger men.. black/white couples...Asian love interest..an FBI agent out of the closet in 2002..I now think she has a very commendable social conscience..turns out, she has a gay son whom she loves deeply, and believes God made him that way, and that is fine with her.. she puts her book plots where her feelings and sense of justice are.. she combines her causes with a WWII hero that is gay.. while she has a lot of sex, it is NOT casual sex..it always is the best sex the person has ever experienced, and they always get  married..!!!..always...in this book we have Max and Gina getting together, as well as Molly and Jones.. most of them also have babies soon after they are married.. hard for me to look at these books as stand alone books...seems knowledge of the history of her characters is critical.

No Good Duke Goes Unpunished: 3rd Rule of Scoundrels

Author: Sarah MacLean

Reading this series backwards is kind of fun, but I know the big secret behind the series.  This makes me feel like one of the key characters in that I too need to keep it a secret.  This is about a fallen Duke who is believed to have killed his father's wife to be and what happens when the truth finally comes out.  A fun summer read.

Awesome. Read this after reading the author's latest book, The Fold.  It's a Sci-fi story about a group of LA renters trying to determine why their apartment building is so weird. Some of the elements in The Fold were actually introduced in this story (like the neon green roaches with 7 legs).

Never Judge a Lady by Her Cover: The 4th Rule of Scoundrels

This happens to be the 4th book in this series and the last of this story line.  I am now reading book 3.  A little backwards, but still a fun book to read.   If you are a stickler for period romances and have to critique all the fun out of this book then don't read it.  This is about a gaming hell called the Fallen Angel and one of its founding members.  If I tell you more then I give away the surprise.  Enjoy.

Love is Murder

Author: Sandra Brown (ed)

Review by: Saraswati

This is a book of short stories from multiple authors.  The theme is love and murder.  Most of the stories are shorts using the author's known characters.  Like most short stories, most of these feel unfinished.  Still an easy summer read and a way to learn about new authors.

A First Date with Death

This has the feel of a cozy with a twist.  An ex-cop helps out her best friend by being the Bachelorette on a new reality TV series.   The catch is that 1/2 the bachelors are in it for the $ and the other 1/2 are in it for love.  If she selects a $ guy - he gets all the $$$.  If she selects the man of love they share the $ and more gifts.  Unfortunately, there is multiple murders and an EX that will not go away.  WHO DOES SHE PICK?????  I really enjoyed this new series and I hope you do too!

Inherit the Dead

Author: Mark Billingham et al
Stars: 4
Review by: Saraswati

This is a murder, mystery thriller written by 20 Authors.  Each chapter was written by a different person.  Authors include, but not limited to: Heather Graham, Stephen L. Clark, Marcia Clark, Mary Higgins Clark, Charlaine Harris, John Connolly and C.J. Clark.  This was much better than if they all wrote a short story for the book.  It flowed, but you noted the influences.  Lee Child was the glue that put it all together.   A great summer read!  Enjoy!

Again, this is a nice series and in some ways doesn't have to be read in order.  However, if you do, it will make a little more sense.  The organic chef is hysterical.  Enjoy!

This is the first book in this cozy series where a CA Tech Marketing person loses their job and returns home to work an unpredictable job at a brand new organic B&B & Spa.  Since it is a COZY there is a murder, mayhem and the start of falling in love.  The organic tips are a nice plus.  Enjoy!

The Undead in My Bed

Author: Katie MacAlister et al.
Stars: 3
Review by: Saraswati

This book contained three stories about Vampires.  The Katie MacAlister story, "Shades of Gray" is a continuation of another story where a "Beloved" really wasn't.  Now she finds her own.  Molly Harper's "Undead Sublet" is a cute story of vampires coming out and their struggles along with campy humor and fun.  The last Jessica Sims' "Out with the Fang" brings together multiple paranormal romances and has a happy ending.  Easy, summer read - Enjoy all 3!

Against the Tide: The Brodies of Alaska (Book 3)

The last book in this series, but a continuation of the Brodie family history - The eldest son finds his soul mate.  Unfortunately it is not that easy.  Enjoy!
