The concept of this
nonfiction book is intriguing: A well-known cardiac surgeon with a high
position in a New York City hospital gets sucked into a relationship
with the Mafia, and eventually performs many medical
procedures and surgeries on Mafia members, making money and enjoying a
profligate life outside his conventional family life. The book describes
the ugly and violent result when a Mafia member betrays the "Family"
and gets "whacked." The ultimate conflict arises
when this doctor has to perform surgery on a high-ranking Mafia figure
who is likely to "sing" to the authorities: The Mob wants Il Dottore to
make sure this guy does not survive the surgery; the authorities want
the doctor to make sure he does survive.
