A near 500
page biography covering the first 40 years of Lincoln's life, with a
concluding volume to follow. One of the better biographies on him as it
does not delve into the politics of the author
much and sticks to the subject at hand. It is also not overly
sensationalized or sentimental, covering his abusive father, Lincoln's
faults and shyness, and treating Mary Todd Lincoln in a very even handed
manner instead of the insane "hellcat" she is often
identified with. It deals a lot with Lincoln's perspectives toward
slavery and other key issues around the Civil War, and serves as a good
explanation of why and how he thought the way he did.
