Empire: The Novel of Imperial Rome

Author: Steven Saylor
Stars: 4
Review by: Jack H

Empire: the Novel of Imperial Rome, by Steven Saylor, is a great read for fans of ancient Rome or of I Claudius. This is a continuation of the tale of a Roman family from his earlier book, Roma, but you don't need to have read the earlier book to enjoy this one. Saylor integrates the life of a fictional Roman family with the early days of the Roman Empire. Readers will enjoy a fantastic suspenseful tale along with getting a great sense of what it was like to live in Rome during the first centuries of the common era. For those with knowledge of that era of Roman history, it brings those marble statue figures to life. If you enjoy historical mysteries, I highly recommend the Roma Sub Rosa series by the same author with his detective Gordianus the Finder.
