Dead Wake: the Last Crossing of the Lusitania

Author: Erik Larson
Stars: 2
Review by: MandyApgar

I actually feel bad giving a Larson book this low of a rating, but his usual zest was gone from this. Mostly focusing on true crime stories of historic significance, Larson usually does an excellent job, but here seems a bit haphazard at times. He does well in the initial portion of the book - detailing daily life aboard the Lusitania and the U boat that sank it - but after the sinking things seem to derail. He picks up a topic only to drop it abruptly (like the supposed conspiracy that the ship was allowed to sink to trigger US involvement in WWI), a problem which occurs frequently at the end. A much better, and more readable, account is found in the book by Greg King.
