I read this after seeing it mentioned multiple times in
Johnson's librarian themed book. Known for writing about lesser
acknowledged professions, this time she turns to obituary writers. And
there really are a surprising lot of them, with quite a hierarchy too.
She recounts her own personal appreciation of the art of the obituary -
finding the right balance of nostalgia and sympathy without being
sycophantic, and travels with professionals to various conventions as
well. At one two members burst in all a twitter that Reagan had just
died and the room erupts into a hive of activity. Johnson's appreciation
for the field makes this the best I think of her books, and she is
quite lively at times recounting histories and presenting noted (or
infamous) obituaries.
