Choice Words: How Our Language Affects Children's Learning

Author: Peter H. Johnston
Stars: 5
Review by: Saraswati

This book was part of the class I was taking and at first I read it like a text book and then I thought about it.  What we say impacts so many people in so may ways.  My family has sarcasm as part of our genetic code.  Even when we cross a couple generations.  I read this book and realized the impact of the sarcasm on those that do not have this gene.  It really made me rethink how I respond to my students responses.  Instead of, "What were you thinking?"  I need to ask, "How would you rephrase this differently?"  I didn't realize the condescending nature of sarcasm on others since it's just part of my nature.  This book made me rethink how I provide feedback to my students and how I can improve myself as a person.
