Leonardo and the Last Supper

Author: Ross King
Stars: 3
Review by: MandyApgar

A chronicle of what is the world's most famous fresco (it is NOT a painting) with a biography of its artist told as a backdrop. Written by the respected art historian Ross King (Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling, etc.) the history is accurate and told with authority. Also examining the piece's legacy and conservation efforts, it goes a great deal into semi recent controversies regarding the role of Mary Magdalene and others. Examining period records and Da Vinci's own papers, he shows what the artist meant (and it sure wasn't the Magdalene) even down to why certain colors were chosen. On the whole I would've liked it more, but it does go into Da Vinci's life a lot and I am not a fan of his personality or the way he went about doing the fresco. For anyone looking to learn about period techniques or the Magdalene controversy it would be better.
