In These Times: Living in Britain through Napoleon's Wars

Author: Jenny Uglow
Stars: 3
Review by: MandyApgar

This was really good on up to about the last 100 or so pages and then it jumped the shark. Funny thing is, it wasn't really about Napoleon until then. The main thrust of the book is spent on the daily life and activities of average British citizens of various classes and backgrounds during the period. Yes, Napoleon was happily carving up Europe for his incompetent stooge of a family then, but it was barely even a backdrop. We got a "Daily life in Napoleonic era England" instead. Which was nice. The chapters were mostly brief and succinct, yet carried lots of detail and information. Lots of different subjects were gone into. When Napoleon finally did make his presence really concrete in the book towards the end it seemed like the author lost her focus. Splitting her attentions between the wars and the prior gist, she starts to ramble off topic within each chapter instead of being as concise as before.
