This book deserves a 5 rating because it was so well written.
However, it was a difficult read and a disturbing topic. Part of the
story takes place during the First World War with the main character,
Elizabeth, volunteering to deliver food and medical aid to refugees from
the Armenian genocide. Prior to reading this book, I did not know over
1.5 million Armenians were killed in this genocide. Fast forward to
the present for the other part of the book in which Laura, Elizabeth's
granddaughter and a novelist of Armenian heritage, researches her next
book and her family's history. Bohjalian cleverly switches between
present day and WWI to tell the story of Elizabeth and Laura, their
love, loss, and family secrets, at the same time, staying true to a
horrific historical time.
