Destination: Republic of Congo, Africa
I've been generally interested in Africa and its history for a long time, but this book made me want to find out even more. The story begins with the arrival of Baptist preacher Nathan Price in the Belgian Congo with his reluctant family. The family's story is told by Nathan's wife Orleanna and their 4 daughters - teen-age Rachel, twins Leah and Adah, and 5-year-old Ruth May. The voices of the characters feel authentic and believable.  The book has 2 major narratives. The first is Nathan's poorly considered attempts to fit Africa to his strict unyielding beliefs, and the family's attempts to survive in Africa. The second is the way a family tragedy and life in Africa alters the survivors.
