Just Jennifer

Once Upon a River by Bonnie Jo Campbell (Norton, July 2011)

Sixteen-year-old Margo Crane’s mother left her with her father in their small town on the Stark River in Michigan. Margo has always been much of a tomboy and has been attracted by and mesmerized by the river for years. After her father dies a violent death, which Margo precipitated, she takes the boat her grandfather left her and heads up the river looking for her mother. With only her instincts, a few supplies and her beloved Annie Oakley biography, Margo leaves the rest of her extended family in search of her own family. Only thirty miles from her home, Margo makes the choices she thinks are best for her survival, but a love-starved teenager may not always make the best choices. Margo’s growing up is heart-breaking, and though at times the plot is frustrating as readers see Margo making the same mistakes over, there is something about Margo’s will to go on and her capacity to see beyond the outer person that will endear her to readers.
