Just Jennifer

Turn of Mind by Alice Laplante (Atlantic Monthly Press, July 2011)

Jennifer White is a respected orthopedic surgeon who specialized in hand surgery’s and at 64, is experiencing early onset Alzheimer’s presenting with severe dementia. Jennifer has a hard time getting through the day, even with the help of Magdelena. Her two children are fighting with each other over the care and financial control of her money and now the police are questioning her with connection to the murder of her best friend, Amanda, whose four fingers were surgically removed. Told in Jennifer’s voice, fragments of conversations she hears, and entries from the journal she and Magdelena keep to try and help her stay in the present. Slowly, heartbreakingly, Jennifer and Amanda’s story is revealed. Both literary fiction and thriller, Alice Laplante capably renders Jennifer’s frustration with herself and her family as she slips from reality and loses her grasp on all that she has known. Realistically written, anyone who has ever witnessed the ravages of this horrible disease will empathize with Jennifer, her caregiver and even her children as they witness her slow deterioration. As Jennifer’s past unfolds and the police slowly put the pieces together, a sad and horrible, but inevitable truth unfolds. A haunting tale told brilliantly and with compassion.
