I really enjoyed this book for many reasons. While initially, the story seemed light, in terms of the relevant and factual content of horsemanship, I soon realized that real live horse behavior had been written into the story, as well as for this time period a more sensitive understanding to the nature of horses, which makes the character of Martha Lessen even more remarkable. She is a heroine and holds the story together. It was good to get a better understanding of what the wild west was like during the period of WWI and how loyal American citizens were to soldiers who had left home to fight on European soil. It kind of helps me to respect even more our soldiers who are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan and put their sacrifice into perspective.
