Sisters from Shanghai evolve from living the high life as young women, to suddenly married women escaping the Japanese invasion, to wives and mother in Los Angeles. Their immigrant experience contrasts the old China with their new status and the adaptations they make. The ending is abrupt and practically cries out, "Wait for Shanghai Girls, Vol. 2 for the conclusion of this story!
