Great and unusual beginning - in fact an unusual book. Though the father had a severe alcohol problem he was an amazing teacher and most of his lessons got through despite the abject poverty the children experienced. Mom was loyal to Dad, was not much help to children - but there was love that came thru. "Goat" was unbelievably industrious, adventurous and inventive. Where her energy came from, I don't know.
I will read it again.
