Elv, Meg and Claire Story create a fantasy world to initially shield themselves from the hurt and bitterness of their parents' divorce, but it is not enough to protect them from human weaknesses and frailties. This is a very dark Alice Hoffman novel. While it still contains her signature hooks of magical power and hopes for the redeeming quality of love, it also delves into shadowy worlds of child abuse, drug addiction, terminal illness and tragedies, and more. A book well worth reading, however; you will be thinking of it long after you turn the last page.
