The Garrick Year

Author: Margaret Drabble
Stars: 4
Review by: Jelsey

Margaret Drabble's 2nd novel, pub. 1964, features an actor, his wife, and 2 children who leave London for the summer at a festival theater. The book provides a caustic look at the interaction and personalities of actors, directors, stagehands, et al within this temporary setting at the dawn of a changing society. Drabble's husband was an actor, which adds a special sense of authenticity.
