From Nagasaki 1945 to New York 2001 and beyond: a stunningly graceful, elegantly told novel of love, family, friendship and national pride. One of the runners-up for Britain's Orange Prize for Fiction, this is a memorable read. Fine writing creates well-developed, often sympathetic characters set amid the backdrops of historical events. The author does not "prettify" certain details; truth is sometimes unpleasant, but necessary. Be warned: the ending is a heartbreaker.
