Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Author: Barbara Kingsolver
Bugs: 4
Review by: Barbie

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, which I have been wanting to read for a while, motivates me to eat better as well as grow more of my own food. The book validates my yearning to cook and bake from scratch, to buy locally raised beef and to raise my own eggs. Barbara Kingsolver and her family take a year to live off their farm, only purchasing food that has been grown locally if not grown by themselves. The idea is interesting and Ms Kingsolver tells her stories with interest and humor. This was a good book to be reading at the start of summer. Farm Markets, here I come!

The author and her family embarked on a year-long project to discover what it takes to feed a family of four. They raised their own fruits, vegetables, turkeys, and chickens, and traded some of this with other farmers for things like beef and pork.

Her family, who rates gold stars for their enthusiasm, worked alongside her and also wrote for the book.

Kingsolver is an engaging writer who has lots of stories to tell about our American food supply as well as practical recipes to share.

When she mentions having planted fifty tomato plants, she also describes what they did to preserve the fifty pounds they harvested in July as well as the 300 pounds they picked in August. She makes your mouth water for not only "Fresh" but also for "Local."
