I have to admit - I am not loving this book as much as the others because it is written from the main character's point of view. There was something much more mysterious and appealing when you didn't know exactly where he was coming from.
Book ended up ok - held my interest as usual, and flew by at the end.

I read this book as a child and reading it as an adult, the book read differently. Many of the struggles and dreams that Rob McLauglin lived were lost on me as a kid but now, even though the book was published in 1943, it was like they were written, just for me. I really enjoyed this book and will say that it is most definitely the best book I read this summer.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book on so many levels: mystery, romance, botanical information, medicinal information, travel, and adventure. It was a fast paced, easy read and a perfect book to take along on vacation.
I also enjoyed reading about NYC as I work daily in the City and frequent the Union Square market at 14th, it was fun to imagine the scenes the writer describes, think about the building she was living in with a view of the market and to imagine where on 12th Street and 1st Avenue the fascinating and delightful laundromat is located. Think I will need to take a walk there to see!

This was such an interesting book about Phil Smith's father, Lew Smith, who was a well known interior designer in the 50's/60's and then went on to be a healer.
Amazing stories told by Phillip Smith in the healing powers his dad acquired through his spiritual growth and awareness.
Enjoyed the book and the manner in which it was written with great love, tenderness for both his parents, understanding and appreciation. Mr. Smith does not write to "convert" readers or to be "preachy" in any way, but to raise the reader's awareness level about all things spiritual and healing.

The author's bio stated she won "World's Best Cat Litter-ary Award," so I may chance one or two more books in this series to see how they play out.

Though the father had a severe alcohol problem he was an amazing teacher and most of his lessons got through despite the abject poverty the children experienced. Mom was loyal to Dad, was not much help to children - but there was love that came thru. "Goat" was unbelievably industrious, adventurous and inventive. Where her energy came from, I don't know.

What a powerful little book. The author's words convey the sheer horror of trying to survive, physically, emotionally and spiritually, in the Nazi Concentration Camps. If you were to assemble 6,000,000 people together, what would a group of this size look like? You will need a box of tissues, while reading this book, as it is extremely sad.

It was a hilarious book, yet filled with suspense, with some romance and a mother-in-law as a ghost thrown in for good measure. The setting was in the bayous of LA. I am awaiting the second book in the series, which will be out in the Autumn. Delightful!!

Percy Jackson is a "troubled" sixth grade student with ADHD and dyslexia, but finds out, unexpectedly, that the father he has never met is a god from Mount Olympus. Yes, it sounds far-fetched, but Riordan writes an exciting and very enjoyable book incorporating Greek mythology into modern times. I highly recommend this!

This is one of the better books on the market promising ways to organize and enjoy your home. Each chapter ends with a checklist ("Stuff List") in which the reader identifies items on hand, reasons for keeping (sentimental, valuable, gift, object of comfort, etc), and final disposition. Very helpful, as are the author's boxed and highlighted lists of Dangerous Phrases, i.e., "it might be important!" or "It belonged to my favorite aunt!" or "I paid good money (or conversely, "I paid only $2) for it!" I was tempted to buy this book, but wisely decided instead to leave it at the library and re-borrow as needed - a lesson learned from those very pages...

Years later it becomes vital to find her since a trust fund is at stake. This book has funny moments, interesting Southern characters, and a good plot as well.

The Time Traveler's Wife

The premise is very creative and at times confusing....do not get bogged down with the time travel element. I found the first half of the book somewhat shallow with the characters underdeveloped. The second half was more engaging and poignant. Most lovers have the normal relationship challenges, while Clare and Henry need to overcome his out of control disappearing in time. A more romantic movie with a similar time traveling premise is Somewhere in Time with Jane Seymore and Christopher Reeve...gorgeous. Anyway the book has a feel to it that it is really written by a man or thru a man's perspective despite the title. However after the couple's marriage we see a more caring Henry and a desperate desire to conceive a child. The final quarter of the book has you rushing to tie up loose ends and revel in the bittersweet anachronism of the here and now versus the future beyond the pall of death. Interesting and thought provoking. I will see the movie debuting August 14th!
The part I like the most is when they review baby names because they decide upon my mother's.

I am not sure if it was the title that misled me but I expected a story of the TV show, Little House on the Prairie, as lived by the actress who gave voice to Laura Ingalls Wilder's words. Instead we got a typical Hollywood "kiss and tell" book about the private life of Melissa Gilbert. While it is always great to see a renaissance or rebirth of someone...I was really put off by the details of her romances, her drinking and her drug use. With limited time to read, I didn't want to read that kind of story.

I must say that this book may have made it into my favorite books list. I was already reading two other books when I got this in from a hold at the library. I figured I should finish the others first but read the first 3 pages and was hooked. I read half the book that first day. Then it took me two more weeks to finish only because I didn't want to finish and lose the characters. Definitely a unique and captivating read.

Pete Souza, who was the Washington-based national photographer for The Chicago-Tribune, gives us a photo-journalistic view of Barack Obama from the time he was sworn in as Illinois Senator in 2005 through his campaign for the presidency in 2008. Souza was so impressed with Obama's natural and inspiring leadership, that he felt he was photographing a future president of the United States, thus documenting history. It's very moving to look at the photos, especially when you see senior members of Congress attentively taking in each word Obama utters, or when you see the hope and sometimes tears on the faces of Americans as they watch and listen to Obama during his campaign.

All of which helps her get through the day, knowing she has a shorter lease on life.
Elizabeth Edwards is my hero. I liked her before the book, I admire her even more now.

I looked at this book three times before I picked it up (I thought it had a goofy cover)and what do they say.....
If you don't have the time or money to get to China, go with Maarten. Don't speak Chinese? No problem, neither does Maarten! Travel with him all across the country from the industrial coast to Tibet. Get the feel of politics, food, and capitalism in China. Very entertaining.

This was a book of fiction set in NYC's Greenwich Village. It has a somewhat strange plot wherein the characters become somewhat animated outside of their fictional world. This book touches on the themes of divorce, rape, helplessness, and agoraphobia with some strange sex and low self-esteem thrown in. All that having been said, there are many women for whom this novel will most assuredly resonate. As the book points out, one in 5 women are raped in a reported rape. I have read a more recent statistic that said a full quarter of all women in the US will report having been raped. Take into account the unreported ones, and the mind boggles. A good read especially for anyone who has been raped, particularly if their loved ones can't figure out why the aftereffects linger so long...why they cant just "get over it".
