This was a great find. I had never heard of this Dutch author, but was given two of his books for my recent birthday. He is apparently known as the "Dutch Conan Doyle." I can see the comparison. He wrote over 60 books in his career, and I surmise that they are being newly published in the US (I was given an advance copy from a relative in the publishing industry). I really, really enjoyed it and I felt it reminded me a bit of an Inspector Morse novel. Try to find a copy. It's worth your time.

Those Who Save Us

Review by: Kate

Trudy is a middle-aged professor of German history who has some memories of being a young child in Weimar, Germany, during the war, and an old family portrait of herself, her mother, and an SS officer. Her mother refuses to talk about what happened, so Trudy begins an oral history project, talking to Germans who lived through the war, as part of her attempt to make sense of her memories and understand her mother's silence.

Trudy's story in the present day is interwoven with her mother's story from the war. Anna had a daughter out of wedlock fathered by a Jewish doctor she hid from the Nazis, worked for the underground German resistance, and eventually caught the eye of a brutal SS officer. In exchange for food, which became more scarce as the war went on, and gifts he brought for Trudy, Anna became his whore. She describes in stomach-turning detail what he did to her for all those years, and why she let it happen.

This was a difficult book to read - I went from being sympathetic to sickened and back again. The details of Anna's story are appalling, as are some of the interviews Trudy conducts with other Germans who survived the war. But it certainly begs an interesting question - when you're faced with true evil, do you fight for what's right no matter the cost, or do you keep your head down and do whatever you need to do to protect your family and your own life?

I know that this book was a best seller and highly acclaimed but it just did not do anything for me. I understood the parable and the points the story was making but it wasn't something so new or so earth shattering, as the cover promised. The only reason that I am giving it 2 points is because of the question in the book, which really got me: "What would you do if you weren't afraid?" Now, the answer to that question would make a real story.

Elv, Meg and Claire Story create a fantasy world to initially shield themselves from the hurt and bitterness of their parents' divorce, but it is not enough to protect them from human weaknesses and frailties. This is a very dark Alice Hoffman novel. While it still contains her signature hooks of magical power and hopes for the redeeming quality of love, it also delves into shadowy worlds of child abuse, drug addiction, terminal illness and tragedies, and more. A book well worth reading, however; you will be thinking of it long after you turn the last page.

Factory Girls: From Village to City in a Changing China

Author: Leslie T. Chang
Stars: 5
Review by: patioreader

There are lots of things in your house and closet that were "Made in China" and when I think of an assembly line that produces these things I visualize the Ford production line - men and women working all week to pay bills and raise a family.
"Factory Girls" are really just that. Little girls by my standard who leave home or are pushed out by their family to go make money to send home to the farm. Kids who are 14,15,16 take a ten hour train ride to the big city 5 times the size of Manhattan. Not much education and on their own. "There was nothing to do at home, so I went out." Boys as well, but girls are easier to part with. Working 11 hour shifts 6 days a week, with our demands for fair labor practices only getting in the way of their making more overtime to send home. We know this goes on, but travel with the author as she talks to the girls and see how they grow up.

What a surprise, to find such a great book! I loved it! The author's son, Rowan, is autistic. While riding a neighbor's horse, Betsy, the author discovers a powerful connection that his son and the horse share. And so begins, this wonderful story, which finds the author, his wife and son travelling to Mongolia for healing with the horse tribes of Mongolia. Although a non-fiction book, this is an exciting adventure, which also reveals the challenge of raising an autistic child. It is often said that we lack heroes in today's society, well, I found a real live hero in Rupert Isaacson.

Very good book. While researching the roundup of Jews by the French Vichy government in 1942, Julia Jarmond is surprised to learn that she has something in common with one of the children - a 10 year old girl destined for Auschwitz. Julia becomes focused on unraveling Sarah's story and attempting to right a 60 year old wrong. De Rosnay does a good job of weaving the two stories together, and although I thought Julia's marital problems became tedious at times, the end result is a story that is both heartbreaking and touching. Worth reading; it's a story that will stay with you. Keep the tissues close.

Mariana

Review by: Kate

Written during the 1940s by Charles Dickens' grand-daughter, this book tells the story of Mary Shannon growing up in England between the wars. A sweet story about her life and loves, but Mary never really seemed to grow as a person. She fell in love with several "wrong" men and eventually found the right one, but that's about it. She tried some things she didn't like, but she never really got around to telling us why she didn't, and the only thing she ever found that she liked was a man - but again, no reason why he was the one instead of any of the others. It was a good book, but could have been so much better.

The Geography of Bliss

Review by: TooManyBooksTooLittleTime

Written with the style and wit of Bill Bryson, but far more interesting and insightful! Terry Edwards recommended this book, because of the Iceland chapter, and I cannot thank her enough! This is an exploration of a handful of countries where the people are supposed to be happiest. I laughed and learned, as I read about the various cultures and countries. It did make me a happier person in reading it. I could not stop quoting passages to my 15 year old, who I am hoping will read it before I return it.

Through the Eyes of the Horse

Stars: 5
Review by: RjS

There are so many "natural horsemen" out there now. And sometimes, their philosophies, well, they don't sound very natural to me. Carlos Tabernaberri's philosophy of less is more is refreshing. There are no detailed steps or procedures or levels or courses involved. Only sensitivity towards the horse and developing a relationship based on trust. I will probably read this book many more times, in order to absorb the knowledge, down into the core of my being. A wonderful book, if you love horses.

Review by: DebH09

I read this book because my child attends HCRHS and it was chosen by Dr. Brady as one school one book. It is encouraged that all students, teachers, family members and the general community read this book. While the subject in general was depressing, it was very moving to see how Ashley overcame a system that did not work for her and learned the true meaning of family. I found her story inspiring.

Death by Cashmere

Author: Sally Goldenbaum
Stars: 2
Review by: JamBob

First in the series of Seaside Knitters Mystery, Izzy who realizes she cannot be a criminal attorney opens a knitting shop in her old seaside town. Her Aunt and dear friends gather together often in this tight-"knit" community to eat a meal, share a glass of wine and unravel a yarn of murder and mystery. The story was longer than it needed to be but it was pleasant summer fare with the sea breeze mingling with dastardedly mis-deeds. On the last few pages the author includes a knitting pattern for a featured scarf in the book.

Ms. Wickham has a wonderful British sense of humor, and you are drawn into her delightful web of intrigue into the explanation a very special secret. The story and the characters get better and more interesting as you move along. If you like any of Ms. Wickham's other books, this will not disappoint you. You will not want to put it down. I recommend it highly, it will make you laugh, think and smile.

Well-crafted, moving stories whose authors set out to explain their own, often complicated, multigenerational conflicts. We reach over the heads of our children and hold hands with our future."

Disappointing. Ho-hum portrayal of Smith College girls (I use that word deliberately), class of 2002. The writing is flat; characters are stereotypes that are hard to care about; plotlines barely exist and then, in the final third of the novel, border on bizarre. Despite positive reviews, this book is no groundbreaking The Group.

S Is for Silence

Review by: softballmom

Though I enjoyed this book, it was written in a much different style than the previous alphabet books I've read. I missed Kinsey's quirky behaviors. The Seven Storey Mountain

Stars: 5
Review by: RjS

This was one of the most challenging books that I have read in a long time. In some parts, it was very DRY, almost a bit boring, but if you can get past these parts, you will discover some treasures and witness the conversion of a man who was terrified of Catholicism and Religious life and became one of the Church's greatest teachers. The book is raw and honest, and leaves the reader in wonder and awe over the great faith of Thomas Merton. This was a most inspiring book.

Keepsake Crimes is the first in the scrapbooking mystery series by this author. It is a cozy type who-done-it based in New Orleans on a group of mostly women friends who enjoy this craft. The main character is Carmela Bertrand recently estranged from her husband creating some social tensions. The story line is not as important as the character interactions that are spiced with wonderful food recipes and craft tips. I am not a scrapbooking person but I enjoyed reading about the ambience of a city I cherished before Katrina and all the sights sounds and aromas. Try it...you may like the flavor of the series and the Jambalaya!

Review by: Transit Story Reader

Enjoyed this book a lot as it is straight talk and on the mark. It also included a lot of funny jokes in each chapter. Too bad I can't remember them or tell them as well as Willie can. All in all, the man led an interesting life and realized along the way, before it was too late, that if you listen to your own heart, it will lead you to a happier way of life, full of love and contentment. Not a bad philosophy, but not always easy to recognize and maintain for many. He didn't say anything new that many of us haven't already read about or heard, but he does have a way of saying that is pure and simple and to the point.

It was an interesting read, sort of "Sex and the Italian/American Girl." Enjoyed reading the recipes most of all, so perhaps it was really a cookbook in the guise of a memoir! It was interesting to note that, as an Italian/American who also enjoys cooking, Ms. Melucci's recipes are very similar to those of my mom's and so I realized I was reading them and doing a comparison on how she prepares them and how we do in our family. That was probably the most fun... At best, a light and an interesting summer read.

He has brought to life the plight of the various Inuit and Indian tribes as the people in Ottawa make decisions to move them, rule them, and destroy their way of life. It is one of the most interesting and moving books I have ever read. About a way of life that is being changed forever, with their language and culture being bred out of them. This was written in 1966, things could only have gotten worse with time and globing warming.

The Day I Ate Whatever I Wanted

Review by: patco81

Elizabeth Berg has written quite a few excellent novels, but what a great surprise to discover her talent for short stories as well! The majority of these will appeal to women of a certain age (full disclosure: I am one), so be prepared for dry, biting wit, sarcasm, irony, regret and remembrances. Very well done; I know many readers, like myself, will identify with certain characters and situations.

The mental image of a "spry octogenarian," on camera, having Barney pull off her hula-hula skirt, leaving her in her underwear, cracks me up! This was a hilarious book and at times, incredibly poignant, as Dick Wolfsie recounts his life with Barney, his dog and his business partner. A very good book!

I had high hopes for this book because of the summary. But I couldn't stand the main character - completely DESPERATE - breaks into her boyfriends' email accounts, follows guys to their homes. And then the ending was completely unlikely. It was barely ok. I don't recommend it.

I find myself reading the lines out loud. I love these characters.

Written as a series of letters between a writer (Juliet), her editor, friends, and inhabitants of the island of Guernsey, in the period immediately following WWII. Thanks to a used book, Juliet becomes acquainted with islanders and learns their stories: how they survived the war, the hardships they endured, and how the creation of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society helped them get through.

A very enjoyable book, both funny and touching, about friendships and hardships. Highly recommended.

I have read this book once before and still, it is fresh, new and relevant to where I find myself now, in my horse journey. Horses are very subtle, in trying to please us and yet, we are so consumed with our techniques and results, that we miss the "try" that horses offer, in pleasing us. I love this book.

Some of the stories were amazing! The "Spies in the House of Faith" with the Dalai Lama was wonderful, with hidden insight in into the Chinese religious suppression. "The Last Safari" was also a frightening story of the insurgents fighting Uganda. All of the individual stories were interesting and well picked from great travel writers.

From Nagasaki 1945 to New York 2001 and beyond: a stunningly graceful, elegantly told novel of love, family, friendship and national pride. One of the runners-up for Britain's Orange Prize for Fiction, this is a memorable read. Fine writing creates well-developed, often sympathetic characters set amid the backdrops of historical events. The author does not "prettify" certain details; truth is sometimes unpleasant, but necessary. Be warned: the ending is a heartbreaker.

Amy and Isabelle

Author: Elizabeth Strout
Stars: 2
Review by: patco81

Earlier work from the author of Olive Kitteridge, depicting small-town life through the eyes of mother and daughter. Rather bleak and sometimes leaden; at times I had to force myself to continue, wondering whether the book was going anywhere. None of the characters were likeable enough to care about - all seemed trapped in closets of their own creation. Although the writing was at times lyrical, the content was so overwhelmingly morose and melancholy, it was a relief when the book ended so the suffering of its people would end as well.

The Help

Author: Kathryn Stockett

What was it about America in 1962? That was the setting for the iconic films American Graffiti, Hairspray, Animal House, and numerous novels, now including The Help. With hindsight, of course, we can see that 1962 presaged a great social and cultural upheaval, foremost in the burgeoning civil rights movement, followed by the singular call for women's and others' rights. The Help gives voice to the invisible black female domestic workers in white Mississippi homes, and does a credible job of portraying their everyday struggles. While the dialect of the women did get somewhat tiresome (compared with the perfect speech and grammar of the white ladies - didn't anyone ever drop a 'g?'), their stories were compelling and moving. Highly recommended. This would also work well as a film, a 1962 period piece.
